The American Dental Society of Anesthesiology (ADSA) is meeting this December in Chicago for several days this week to provide a forum for our members to update our skills and knowledge in the constantly advancing discipline of Anesthesia and Sedation Dentistry. I’ll be attending nine of the advanced courses and meeting with friends and colleagues to discuss issues of improved patient care and comfort.
Chicago is a beautiful city and while December is not my ideal time to visit one of my favorite places, ADSA anesthesiologists from across the country will be presenting courses and learning from each other.
Human Simulation models of sophisticated design will also be available for more advanced training. These high tech devices are utilized to practice emergency scenarios and are computer controlled to give real time feedback to the doctor who is advancing or refining his skills.
Also welcome is the free time to share with other world-renowned anesthesia professionals from across the country. Of particular interest to me is the abundance of discussions relating to various disease states as they affect the safe administration of anesthesia to diabetic patients, children with special needs, cardiac disease afflicted patients and obese patients who pose unique challenges with respect to providing safe anesthesia.
Many anesthesia products suppliers will also have displays and knowledgeable representatives present to demonstrate their newest products. Of course it’s always impossible to turn down free samples of anesthesia products as well. I feel like a little kid in a candy store with so much to see, learn and do.
The ADSA is comprised of Dentist Anesthesiologists as well as Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons so the combined experience and clinical expertise is highly valuable to those of us who emphasize Dental Anesthesia and Sedation Dentistry in our practices on a routine basis. The Dental Anesthesiologists present who provide sedation dentistry routinely as I do are the primary “knowledge base” of this meeting.
Ultimately, because I practice Sedation Dentistry in CT, I will bring back any new ideas and information to benefit my patients who desire sedation dentistry at Gentle Dental Care in Plainville, CT.
